Hiking in the Pyrenees

Living at Las Laous over the Summer and peering into the Pyrenees on a daily basis gave us Jesse a thirst to get amongst the mountains on a more intimate level. Thus, we began planning a 2 week hiking adventure westwards through the Pyrenees, criss crossing from France to Spain along the GR10 and GR11 trails. Jesse is basically a mountain goat when it comes to hiking, he loves the uphill part. Me, I’m more of an even gradient kinda girl. I was really putting myself out there committing to this trip, considering we’d planned to walk up and down enormous mountains for 14 days. It was decided that we weren’t to carry any camping gear, it’s just so heavy and I would’ve hated seeing Jesse carrying all that stuff… Luckily, throughout the Pyrenees there are many refuges where you can get a bed in a dorm room and a half decent meal at the end of a long day. Problem solved. In the end we only hiked for 5 days, as it started raining, and who wants to walk for 8-10 hours a day through the cold and wet rain not seeing a thing around you? Not me us.

In all honesty, this was one of the best adventures we’ve had together. We can not recommend this part of France highly enough. The vibe is quite different to the other parts we’ve visited and the mountains are something else. We will eventually get back to the Pyrenees to finish off our hike we had planned, but for now an Italian adventure awaits…
